Often, it is quite chaotic in the studio.
Blowtorches blaze as Don Lillie and Thom rush around to complete an order for a customer.
Don and Thom make amazing art glass which is extremely sought after by collectors.
I walked into the Lille shop one day and saw Don Lille speaking with the fire marshal of Smyrna. As I got closer, I could hear them speaking about a particular award for a brave firefighter who risked his life doing his duty.
The fire marshal and Don finally settle on an award that catches the essence of a brave firefighter, which was a fire axe.
Making Art from Glass
Making glass blown art is a challenge, when you must make sure to keep it spectacular, and keep you clients happy.
This is why often an "idea" ends up becoming a very different and tailored made figure.
Thom and Don must conform to making items for resale, in other words, pieces that are generally bought, but they still end up making lots of work that just satisfies their artistic juices.
Don and Thom can think up a sketch for somebody, and design it into a tremendous sculpture.
Often, Thom can use his dreams to flow into his glass artwork and create a masterpiece from a simple piece of glass.
Thom's background is in scientific glassblowing, which means that many of his sketches are not attempted by any other glassblowing artist.
Blowing glass bubbles is not what Thom does, but rather use very small pieces of glass, his breath and a blowtorch to create his masterpieces.
Scientific glassblowers often use their knowledge to make beakers or coiling, so that is what truly makes Thom distinctive because he uses his abilities to create glass works of art.

How do you photograph a large hand drawn art piece?
I have a Canon Rebel SLR
Place art on wall with neutral background. Gray tone or flat black will work.
Place the camera on a tripod and and attach your remote trigger release cable.
Whip out a light meter to see if you have optimal light and adjust your lights to about a 45 degree angle so that the reflection of light is not captured on a reflective surface part.
Square photo in your viewfinder.
make sure your film speed is adjusted to the proper setting.
Take photo.
Take several photos just in case.
Or... Take photo of art work outside on the South side of a building (If you are North of the equator.) Hang a black bedsheet or felt on the wall, and attach work to the wall..., place camera on tripod and square up the picture in the viewfinder and take a picture. (The sun should be shining.) You can probably get away without using a remote trigger release cable on higher speeds in full sunlight.
