How do you as an artist catch people's attention with your art?
How do stand out and make a statement with your art? WHat should you do to really stand out and make a name for yourslef? Salvador Dali created a huge amount of attention and sort of achieved celbrity status because he was so strange and thus he made a sucess of his art without "selling out" and going all comercial like for example Jackson Pollock.
Jackson Pollack was NOT a commercial artist. He was very popular in the galleries in which he sold his work, and his work brought a lot of attention and became costly. But he did not do his art for that purpose. He did his art, his way only, by spending sometimes months at a time sitting in one place, mulling over the ideas he wanted to convey. When his drinking interfered with his life, his art showed that and became unsellable. When he sobered up, it showed in his work again. Unfortunately, he, and the two women with him died when he lost control of his car while driving drunk, thus making the work anyone had of his that much more expensive to resell.
If you want to draw attention to your art you need to be the first to do some kind of work no one else has done. Since there are so many artists in today's market it is much harder to create original work. One thing that will make a big difference is if you are an excellent artist in your technical skills. That will demonstrate to anyone seeing your work that you have taken the time and put in the energy to become a highly skilled artist.
The most important is the concept behind your art. Why did you do that piece that way? What was the message you were trying to get across? Did you accomplish that with talent, or just superficially, without thought, and using borrowed imagery and symbolism? This is where art history comes in to play. You must have good ideas behind your work. Techincal skills alone won't usually carry your work to the top.
You can use outrage, and some artists have been successful using it. Often, though, the idea behind the outrage is so foolish people will turn their backs on this kind of work. A few artists have made names for themselves using blood/feces. That's illegal in most communities, so if you were to choose this kind of art, you'd have to expect to spend some time in jail. Not a good choice.
