Its more than just a bunch of Chinese Symbols and words - it really goes deeper into the actual meanings of symbols. what is the best chinese-english dictionary on the bookstores?

i started to take mandarin lessons at my local school and i've been looking for a nice chinese-english dictionary but i haven't really found any really useful one ... you know to take it with me at class and look for words (not online dictionaries)

does anybody know any useful mandarin-english dictionaries? (doesn't matter the size or brand)

Well, ironically, in Malaysia, we can get a good Mandarin-English dictionary at a good price. I'm not sure if you have a lot of selection in your country. However, do look for Oxford university press, I mean if it is available in your country. Berlitz Mandarin-English dictionary is also good. So do Longman.

However, a good dictionary doesn't always depend on its brand. I will give you some tips to look for and select a good Mandarin-English dictionary.

Mandarin (or Chinese) dictionary is very different from other language dictionary because you can't find an unknown character by using pinyin. You need to find an unknown character by looking through its radicle （bushou ,部首 or pianpang，偏旁）.After you successful to determine the radicle of the character, count its strokes with out the radicle. Search for you character and go to the relative pages.

That's why, it is important to make sure that the dictionary you wanted to buy have the above features. You also need to make sure that dictionary at lest has pinyin and characters features together. Some dictionary has either only has pinyin or character with improper pinyin system. These are just junk cause they won't really help a Chinese learner learn Chinese effectively.

And also do determine which kind of Chinese that publisher is based on. Don't buy it if they didn't it on Mainland China Chinese, or Standard Mandarin. Some publisher will base on Taiwanese Chinese, which is in some extent, different from Standard Mandarin. If you can't determine which is which , look for some character which has different pronunciation in both system, e.g. 垃圾 PRC: lājī TW:lèsè；和 PRC:hé TW:hàn;血液 PRC:xuèyè TW:xiěyì;悬崖 PRC:xuányá TW:xuán'ái.

It is not that Taiwanese Chinese not good. But since your school is teaching Standard Mandarin, so it is better if you look for dictionary that is coherent with the system that you are learning.
