it is only a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. But the certain features and the excellence of its design have proclaimed it as a modern wonder of 21st century.
Marvelously, yet conveniently linking San Francisco with Marin County Golden Gate with the total length of the bridge spanning 1.2 miles, The Golden Gate Bridge held the title of the longest suspension bridge for a long long time. The bridge sways 27 feet to withstand winds of up to 100 miles per hour. It is indeed, a miracle especially considering the era of its making that is remembered in the history as the "Years of Great Depression". During these years, the might of human fought with the worst of weathers, persistent fog, 60-mile-per-hour winds, and strong ocean currents. At several times, when the strength of human gave way to pessimism the bridge was considered as absolute impossibility.
At the day of its impeccable completion in May 27, 1937 It came as a both pleasant yet shocking surprise to those who once title the Golden Gate Bridge as the "Bridge that couldn't be built."
Over 200,000 people celebrated the grand opening of the Golden Gate Bridge by walking its length. The following day, a dedication ceremony was held to officially inaugurate what would become the architectural icon of the country and still remains one. The regular flow of vehicular traffic began the next day. Although it took a little more than four years of constant hardships, unforgiving natural elements and encounters with impossibilities, to construct this wonder of architecture and design; but the result as we can see today, is significant. Even today, the massive spans of the bridge are often shrouded in fog. Tragically, eleven men lost their lives during the construction of this mighty bridge. The expenditure, $35 million but the hopes and efforts uncountable.
One important fact about the design of this living monument is the selection of the color. Today, we can not imagine the Golden Gate Bridge in any other color but orange. It must have been a tough choice. In 1933, the braniac architect selected the color Orange to blend well with the bridge's natural surroundings. The two great cables extending from the bridge contain 80,000 miles of steel wire, which is enough to circle the equator three times. The concrete poured to cement the bridge into the stormy waters below could have also been used to pave a five-foot sidewalk from New York to San Francisco, but the Impossible bridge, we have today is worth it.
Today, it is the existence of the Golden Gate Bridge that has evolved San Francisco as one of the premier skyline cities in the nation. Where are the best places to view the Golden Gate Bridge?
I'm going to be in San Francisco in June and I would like to know where are the best spots to get a great view of the Golden gate bridge, especially with the city in the background.
A lot of ideas, but from my experience Marine Headlands is by far the best.
You won't be able to predict it, but if you're at the right time you can see an awesome view of the fog rolling in and quickly cover the bridge and the city. When this happens you're generally above the fog looking down on it. The top of the bridge usually sticks up above the fog as well. Even without this, though, the view is by far the best to see what you're asking for.
