The term “hunter” is used to describe a type of horse or pony that would be suitable to take hunting, or has taken part in a hunt.

 A hunter type horse or pony can vary in size, type, colour and breed. Often hunter types are categorised as light, medium and heavy weight horses, also as a ladies or a gentleman’s hunter, the former being a lighter weight smaller horse the latter a heavier weight, larger horse.  

A hunter type horse or pony must have a number of qualities, a well mannered horse that is good to handle and an uncomplicated ride, a horse that is happy to be ridden out alone or in company, to go first or last and that is good with traffic. Many hunter type horses are used to compete in cross country competitions, hunter trails, and take part in riding club or pony club activities.

The hunter must be a responsive ride as the horse or pony will be faced with many open fields, the hunter must be a good bold jumper as when out on the field there may be many large solid obstacles to tackle such as stone walls, five bar gates, ditches and hurdles. A hunter must be a strong horse and have good stamina as the hunt can go on for hours.

The Irish draught has strength, good bone, is a superb jumper and is calm and has an unflappable nature, essential for the hunting field. what to look for when buying a hunter horse?

i don't have enough time to go to ranches and look for horses so ive been looking on the internet, the horse adds have pictures and videos and little reports the owners have written. what are some signs that its not a good deal, the horse is drugged, or just some things i need to watch out for and some things i should look for that are positive? im looking for an intermediate rider hunter horse that's very willing and is about 8-12 years old. perferably a gelding

Before you visit a horse to try, ask lots of questions, ask to see CURRENT videos and pictures, and ask that the horse still be in the pasture when you arrive. You want to see the horse when she's in her normal environment, when she's not being handled. You want to be able to go get her from the pasture without her running away, just like you want to pick her feet without being kicked. Things like that are a good indication of what kind of training she's had and how much time has been put into her. Bring a trained or a knowledgeable friend to watch from the ground. Listen to what the seller is telling you. Is the seller trying to do everything for you? Maybe the horse isn't as well-trained as promised, and the seller is trying to hide that.

If the owner claims the horse can do everything, but is only charging a few hundred dollars, that would be a red flag. Old horses, young horses, untrained horses, or ones with chronic health issues tend to be cheaper; you'll have to figure out if these are handicaps you can work with, or if something else is wrong with the animal.

When you check out the horse, look for good legs and a good back. If you want a sound animal that will be key. Everything else is mostly aesthetics. Check what kind of bit the horse uses - a harsher bit usually means a "hotter" horse. You'll have to figure out the specifics of what else to look for - it really depends on what you want to do.
