What is a Large Acrylic/ Glass Rod used for?

Just bought a house and in the garage we found a large acrylic/glass looking rod. It is Cylindrical, about 4 feet long and 3 inches in diameter. I am curious what it would possibly be used for. I would like to put it in an up coming garage sale. How much is it worth or should I just chuck it with the trash?

Any help would be great! Thank you!

It was probably part of a piece of furniture or a lamp, forming a clear column between a base and a top or one of several legs. It is moderately costly to duplicate ($50-60 probably) but easy to get from an acrylic plastics supplier. Yard sale seems a good choice to me. Because there are two kinds of acrylic shapes, cast and extruded, and the latter has problems when machined, I would expect a machine shop would not be interested.
