Weddings in India
Most of the Hindu wedding ceremonies are very traditional. They are probably the same as they were thousands years ago. First, the wedding depends only on the parents of the boys. Girls have no choice - they can always been told to marry somebody they don't even know. On the wedding day newly-weds are not allowed to eat anything till the beginning of the ceremony. In the groom's house a yellow colour glorification ritual has been performed. This is considered to be the colour of the Sun and a symbol of fidelity.
First all people present dye their foreheads with yellow dye and then they throw on each other yellow powder. After the ceremony the father of the groom reads the names of all deceased relatives of the family making them witnesses of the wedding in such a way. After that all the participants in the ceremony go to the bride's house and perform the same ceremony.
The wedding itself is in the house of the bride and usually in the evening. At a given time the groom arrives with his friends and relatives. In order to perform the ritual a small temple has been built. It is covered by canopy and decorated by palms and many yellow flowers. The groom stands on a bridge stone and waits until some people carry out the bride on a wooden palanquin. She is usually wearing a bright red sari and has a lot of jewelry. People who carry the palanquin must walk around the groom seven times and when they stop they ask the newly-weds to look at each other in the eyes. The bridal procession goes to the place where a minister says a prayer and after the vows of the bride and the groom he connects their hands with flowers in a garland. At this moment the groom puts red dye on his forehead. Then they are declared husband and wife. After that all celebrate singing and dancing all night long. In the morning guests leave the house of the bride and her husband takes her to his house. There they also receive some presents. The next day the relatives of the wife come to the husband's house with presents. There they have dinner and entertainments. Most of the weddings are very expensive. In Pendjab the bride does not leave the house for two days before wedding.
