John Godward: Painting Beautiful Women in Victorian Style of Painting

John William Godward (1861 – 1922) was a British painter. He was a painter different from other artists of his time. He was a Victorian Neo-classicist painter and a follower in theory of the master painter Frederic Leighton. Most of the paintings done by him were featuring the women in classical dresses. His collection of artworks is rich with the paintings of semi-clothed and unclothed females.

The Art: When the colour-loaded brush of a painter runs on a canvas, it does not remain mute. It speaks. It sings a song along with the rhythm of the colours. And when we look at such a painting, we have our choices, desires and purposes. These purposes are as varied as the number of the people seeing it. For most of the people the work of art, a painting or a sculpture, is an object to look at and get enjoyed and be pleased. But for a creative artist, a painting, or any piece of artwork, is an allegory. It is because in a painting the figures are intended to personify a variety of abstract ideas and the thinking.

The Paintings: At first glance, paintings of Godward would look simple portraits of homely women. But to conclude in that manner would be a mistake. He had good architectural knowledge and had very deep knowledge of the dresses. Due to this extraordinary prowess, he could paint the tiniest details of the dresses and the parts of the building that happened to be on canvas.

If we look at his painting titled as Tranquility (1914), we can see the vibrant use of red and transparent red used for the clothes of the woman portrayed. The natural scene painted in the backside of the sitting to the natural beauty of the figure. The choice of subject matter by him was more similar to that of Victorian Neo-classicist style of painting. He had kept his palette a vibrantly colourful one. No colour and no mood would escape his palette.

In his paintings, would mark the supporting presence of landscape feature. His female figures, unclothed or clothed, are generally posed against landscape features. From his artworks and the dresses he painted, we can assume that he had painted under the influence of the artists of Classical Greco-Roman style of painting.

He was a keen observer of the things. In many of his paintings we can see how he painted the artistic legs of the table on which the lady would put her beauty box, her make-up materials.

Contrast the personalities of John Winthrop, William Bradford, and Roger Williams?

Williams...was by fa the best of the three, the other two being scoundrels and witch burners.

He was formally set apart as pastor of the church about May, 1635, against the earnest protests of the Massachusetts authorities. An outline of the issues raised by Williams and uncompromisingly pressed includes the following:

1. He regarded the Church of England as apostate, and any kind of fellowship with it as grievous sin. He accordingly renounced communion not only with this church but with all who would not join with him in repudiating it.
2. He denounced the charter of the Massachusetts Company because it falsely represented the king of England as a Christian, and assumed that he had the right to give to his own subjects the land of the native Indians. He disapproved of "the unchristian oaths swallowed down" by the colonists "at their coming forth from Old England, especially in the superstitious Laud's time and domineering." He drew up a letter addressed to the King expressing his dissatisfaction with the charter and sought to secure for it the endorsement of prominent colonists. In this letter he is said to have charged King James I with blasphemy for calling Europe "Christendom" and to have applied to the reigning king some of the most opprobrious epithets in the Apocalypse.
3. Equally disquieting was Williams' opposition to the "citizens' oath," which magistrates sought to force upon the colonists in order to be assured of their loyalty. Williams maintained that it was Christ's sole prerogative to have his office established by oath, and that unregenerate men ought not in any case to be invited to perform any religious act. In opposing the oath Williams gained so much popular support that the measure had to be abandoned.
4. In a dispute between the Massachusetts Bay court and the Salem colony regarding the possession of a piece of land (Marblehead) claimed by the latter, the court offered to accede to the claims of Salem on condition that the Salem church make amends for its insolent conduct in installing Williams as pastor in defiance of the court and ministers. This demand involved the removal of the pastor. Williams regarded this proposal as an outrageous attempt at bribery and had the Salem church send to the other Massachusetts churches a denunciation of the proceeding and demand that the churches exclude the magistrates from membership. This act was sharply resented by magistrates and churches, and such pressure was brought to bear upon the Salem church as led a majority to consent to the removal of their pastor. He never entered the chapel again, but held religious services in his own house with his faithful adherents.

Bradford:

He was the son of William Bradford and was born on March 19, 1590 A.D. near Doncaster, in Austerfield, Yorkshire. At an early age, he was attracted to the "primitive" congregational church, in nearby Scrooby, and became a committed member of what was termed a "Separatist" church, since the church-members had wanted to separate from the Church of England. By contrast, the Puritans wanted to purify the Church of England. The Separatists instead felt the Church was beyond redemption due to unbiblical doctrines and teachings.

When James I began to persecute Separatists in 1609, Bradford fled to the Netherlands, along with many members of the congregation. These Separatists went first to Amsterdam before settling at Leiden. Bradford married his first wife, Dorothy May (d. December 7, 1620), on December 10, 1613 in Amsterdam. While at Leiden, he supported himself as a fustian weaver.

Winthrop:

Claims to inheritance were presented to the royal court in London by the father Abraham Johnson a Sherriff of the Queen (Rutland, North of Nottingham). Isaac Johnson was buried with his wife the Lady Arbella of Lincolnshire on his land, now called King's Chapel, on Tremont Street, Boston. A reference is made to Isaac Johnson in the first chapter of the book "A Scarlet Letter".

Winthrop endangered his servants for the purpose of running his enterprises and docks; "they had not clean water and many died before Winthrop was urged to move to Boston".

Winthrop saw to the hanging of Mary Latham and James Britton in 1644, both found in adultery, but he also admitted to an encounter with an Indian woman at an abandoned settlement not far from his home. Many men searched for him all night only for him to be found not far from home with a very strange story to excuse himself with.

John Winthrop had been elected governor of the colony prior to departure in 1629, and he was re-elected many times. As governor he was one of the least radical of the Puritans, trying to keep the number of executions for heresy to a minimum and working to prevent the implementation of more conservative practices such as veiling women, which many Puritans supported.

Like his Puritan brethren, Winthrop strove to establish a Christian community that held uniform doctrinal beliefs. It was for this reason that in 1638 he presided over the heresy trial and banishing of Anne Hutchinson from the colony. During this trial Winthrop referred to Hutchinson as an "American Jezebel."[3] Winthrop also subscribed to the belief that the native peoples who lived in the hinterlands around the colony had been struck down by God, who sent disease among them because of their non-Christian beliefs: "But for the natives in these parts, God hath so pursued them, as for 300 miles space the greatest part of them are swept away by smallpox which still continues among them. So as God hath thereby cleared our title to this place, those who remain in these parts, being in all not 50, have put themselves under our protection.
