Abstract Expressionism - a Movement
Abstract Expressionism was a movement that originated in post World War II America, it was the first American art movement that became globally influential and it replaced Paris with New York as the centre of the art world. Abstract Expressionism does not describe one particular style but rather an attitude rooted in a need to express individuality and improvise spontaneously. The movement’s name is derived from the influences of the emotional intensities and self denial of the German Expressionists and the anti-figurative aesthetic of the European abstract schools such as Futurism, Bauhaus and Synthetic Cubism. Many modernist artists had fled Paris during World War II, many of whom settled in New York. The modernist movement in New York was influenced by Picasso, Matisse, Miro, Surrealism and Cubism. Jackson Pollack, one of the leading lights in the movement in New York was to re-define the way that art was created. Pollack placed large canvases on the floor, so it could be approached from all sides - smashing prior restrictions on the artistic process - he took the easel and stuck it up art’s ass. Abstract Expressionism was on it’s way, Pollack had made it alright and damn well encouraged everybody to think out of the box and explore new ways to approach and make art. It must be stressed that the movement was not constituted of artists of the same style, far from it, in fact some of the artists in the movement did not produce works that were either abstract or expressionist. Indeed, some art critics labelled the movement Action Painting or New York School. Broadly speaking, there were two distinct groups in the movement - those who worked with simple, unified blocks of colour, like Rothko, Newman and Still and those who made use of Surrealist techniques of automatic art, like Pollack, De Kooning and Hofmann. All were influenced by Existentialist thinking, which emphasised the importance of the act of creating and not the finished object.

although modern artists rightly rebelled against the rigid and mechanical academic art of the 19th century, what they sought to replace it with is equally bad - crudely executed canvases whose only selling point was the charisma and personality of the painters and the heady thrill of iconoclasm. evaluated solely as works of art, the paintings of picasso, matisse, kandinsky, klee, pollock, rothko, and almost any other 20th century artist you could name are lacking obviously and deliberately in drawing, but also in the sorts of things you might expect they could have easily pursued - arrangements of light and dark, and subtle color effects. In short, the works are ugly, and were you to look at details of the paint handling of delacroix, rembrandt, and turner you would find them to be far more satisfactory as abstract compositions than those of the modernists.
Yes, that's arguable of course. But I think many contemporary artists made very relevant proposals. You might recognize that the world of ideas moved condiderably inside art during the last two centuries. Dadaist determination was completely new in art; they didn't make nany works but gave origin to surrealism, wich was not completely new because Bosh and others walked on this path before. Impressionism was looking for new ways of expression, wich hability for detail had been surpassed by photography. And other artists from other different movements made a considerable effort for develop their own way if art and innovate. Since all that and despice prices, I think that would had no sense now continue painting as many centuries was done. I can dislike many contemporary works, but I think creation take place on the painted surface and any superficial analysis like it has no detail or any one could do this is not the best way of watching art. I don't like much nowadays art in general. It seems a combo of amorph variety. But, it's good learning from old artists, from the last century ones too and from people trying to make art this days
