Famous Paintings of Claude Monet

Claude Monet is a great artist who is closely associated with Impressionism. In fact, he is considered as a founder of such movement and the term Impressionism itself was derived from his painting "Impression, Sunrise." He is known for subjects like water lilies, haystacks and his wife, Camille. Today, Monet is considered one of the most famous artists in the world comparable to those other greats such as Picasso, Van Gogh and Warhol.

Meanwhile, an important part of Monet's success is his use of light to a level not seen before. There was also a consistency of his work over hundreds of paintings in his long career of achievement. By looking at his paintings, it show a great summary of his life from his exciting travel in the earlier years to his later works from his garden and devotion to wife Camille.

One of his greatest paintings is "Camille" or "The Woman in the Green Dress" which was painted in 1866 and brought him recognition. This is also one of his many works featuring his future wife, Camille Doncieux.

From December 1871 to 1878, Monet lived in Argenteuil. This is a village on the right bank of the Seine River near Paris and also a popular Sunday-outing destination for Parisians. In this place, he painted some of his well known works. In 1872, he painted the "Impression, Sunrise" which depicts a Le Havre landscape. It hung in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 and from the painting's title, an art critic Louis Leroy coined the term Impressionism. Leroy had intended the term as a scorn but the Impressionists appropriated it for themselves.

On the other hand, Monet is probably best known for the paintings that he created from his specially-designed garden in Giverny. These include his Water Lilies, Nympheas, and his Japanese Bridge paintings. He found this particular environment flexible enough to experiment with different lighting and atmospheric conditions which is a hallmark of Impressionism.

Monet used to travel around Europe and the local scenes became his subjects for his impressionist landscape paintings. But later, he spent most of his time in his beloved garden that he constructed in France and this became a perfect venue for some of his paintings. Moreover, Impressionist art typically requires painting during a small window of opportunity during the day where lighting and weather are exactly as required. As he set up his beautiful garden in Giverny, Monet was more flexible with his opportunities to paint. He also had perfect control over his subjects, be it his Japanese-style bridge or the water lilies and other flowers that adorned his garden.
