Selecting Your Paints - The Difference between Oils and Acrylics
Oil paintings are the most pleasant and admirable gift by an artist. Similarly, oil painting reproductions are equally adorable and mesmerizing. Confused, what is difference between oil paintings and oil painting reproductions, the difference is that former is handcrafted by a renowned artist, and the later is the replication of those masterpieces by the present artist with their personal touch.
Now, we exactly can't estimate the time since the oil paints are used for the creation of beautiful paintings by the classic painters. It is said that oil paints are more than thousand years old but till now they are most authentic paints to craft a gripping painting. And interestingly, for oil painting reproductions also oil paints are used and preferred. This is for the recreation of the magic amalgamated by the master on the canvas with oils.
From the history till present, oil paints are the preference of artist because the effect and immortalization generated by oils on the canvas is not produced by any other type of paints e.g. acrylics or inks. You can compare paintings made from oil paint and acrylic, for sure you will find art piece with oil more attractive and eye catching. But that does not mean acrylics are suitable for making paintings. Both paints have their own advantages and disadvantages. The foremost and noteworthy difference between the two is the drying time. Oil paints usually take very long to dry out, you can say from weeks to months can be the estimate dry time. But in case of acrylics, dry time is almost in hours that are much faster than oil paints.
The other difference between the two is the ability of forgiving. Like, with oil paints you have ample time to blend colors of painting well or make some minor changes but with acrylics you are not endowed with such facility because they will dry much before your realization of making a change. Thus, oil paints are easier to fix. The other differences are:
1. Acrylics paints do not have any foul smell whereas oil paints have.
2. Oil paints are more costly than acrylics.
3. Oil paints are more beneficial for the beginners as it give sufficient time to artist to fix the painting, which is not in case of acrylics.
4. Paintings that are made with oil paints are more lucid than the ones using acrylic paints
5. Oil paints are made of linseed oil in a deferment whereas acrylic paints are made of an acrylic resin.
On the basis of the above stated points we can conclude that oil paints are proven and recommended paint for creating oil paintings as well as oil painting reproductions and acrylics are new age paints which have gained many followers but still oil paints are the choice of professionals who need ample and extra time with their paintings to spell the magic in it. Is it wise to paint acrylic over oil?
I like painting with mixed mediums, and in my last painting I painted a pattern with acrylic paint over a background of oil paint. Is this a good idea? I also heard that it's OK to paint acrylic over oil, but it's not OK to paint oil over acrylic (but the person wasn't sure if it was that way or the other way around).
