Hello! I just started oil painting on canvas. Does anybody have any tips on how to speed the drying up? I've been using a blow dryer and it's blowing hot air all right, but the drying up is taking for ever. Thank you dear Yahoo friends.
I believe i can help you. Stop using a blow dryer. It will only do more bad than good and will not dry the oil paint. Oil dries by chemical reaction not by evaporation. Yes the drying time can suck but there are ways to work around this.
You can use acrylic paint for your first layer base coat. Oil will stick to acrylic but do not put acrylic over oil as it will not stick to it for long. Also do not put the oil over acrylic while it is wet or mix the two.
Another thing to keep in mind is that certain oil paint colors dry much faster than others. Knowing this can be a huge advantage when you choose the route of your painting. Colors that dry faster are your umbers, cobalts, and siennas. Colors that will dry very slowly are your cadmiums, ivory black, and zinc white. You can search online for a fuller list of the drying times.
So knowing the drying times I will paint with them in mind such as... If I need to use a cadmium or other slow drying paint, I will apply that first to the area that needs it and then work on the other areas of my painting for a couple days and when i finish that area and come back, it is dry.
Another way is to paint with all the faster drying paints and moving around the painting working the areas while they dry before adding the final coats of the slow drying colors to then be done with the painting.
This was all assuming that you wanted to speed the drying time to add the next layer of paint.
there are chemicals you can add to the paint to make it dry faster but this does not make for a healthy painting 
I do not recommend these. Buy acrylics before you go this far.
Acrylic base coats are the best bet as they dry very quickly. I hope this helped.
