How to Keep Your Framed Artwork Clean and Unharmed

I’m always getting compliments on how well preserved my framed artwork is all around my home. In fact, many times I’ve been asked exactly what I do to keep these art pieces in pristine condition. So today I decided to put down in words exactly what I do to keep my framed artwork looking good for the long run. So settle down in your chair, relax and I will take you step by step on exactly what to do.

First of all, where you place your framed artwork is an important aspect in keeping your art unharmed. Always be sure to place your art away from direct sunlight. Harmful UV rays will cause what I call sun bleaching. If you allow direct sunlight on your framed art, before long your artwork will begin to fade and eventually destroy your art.

To avoid harmful fading to your art from direct sunlight, either place your framed art where the sun won’t shine or shade your art from direct sunlight during those hours of the day that the sun shines in the direction of your art.

There is another option to prevent harmful UV rays from fading your framed art, if you are not able to shade your art from sunlight coming through a window. You also have the option to have an ultra violet filtering film applied to the window. This film will block out harmful UV rays and your framed art will be protected from fading.

Using acid free mats is also a good way to protect your framed art. This will help avoid your art from becoming discolored. Be sure to ask, if you are having an artwork framed, if the matting is acid free.

Now we will take a look at how to clean the glass covering your framed art. In order to clean the glass, always spray the cleaning cloth with the liquid cleaner and never directly on the glass. This will safely clean the glass, and at the same time, this will avoid any possible damage from the liquid cleaner seeping into the frame and damaging either the artwork or the mat or both.

The type of cloth you use to clean your framed art must also be well thought. Avoid using a cloth that may scratch or harm your frame, always use a cloth that is made from either lambs wool or micro fiber. These types of clothes are extremely soft and will never scratch the surface of the artwork frame.

Here are some basic techniques that will protect your framed art and help avoid some possible damaging results.

When moving a framed artwork, always hold the art with two hands, one hand on each opposite side of the frame. Never hold the artwork by the hanging wire or hanging clip used to hang the picture on a wall. Just remember, two hands holding the frame on opposite sides of the artwork. This will prevent you from possibly dropping the art and doing some damage.

Always remember, never place your treasured art in a room with high moisture such as a bathroom. Another room in your home to avoid hanging valuable artwork is your kitchen. There are too many harmful oils and stream related vapors in the air of a kitchen, caused by cooking, that can have a damaging effect on a framed artwork.

If your framed artwork is a valuable oil painting, you may want to have it cleaned by a professional. This is always an option. Otherwise, a gentle dusting with a lamb’s wool duster will be safe for inexpensive oil paintings lightly textured.

No matter what the actual value of your framed art is, you picked the art because it gives you pleasure. You want to protect your art from damage and preserve it for many years to come. Follow these suggestions and your art will remain pristine for the long run.

Where can I frame (at a decent price) an oil painting in Cincinnati?

I purchased two oil paintings in the Dominican Republic. One is 30 x 40 and another 12 x 32. I went to several places, including Michaels and they are charging $600 to put them on a stretcher, including a fabric mat and frame, which is more than what I paid for the paintings ($400). I paid a lot less for art framing in Miami!

Michaels Craft Stores and Frame and Saves are all around the city call each and see who has what you want at the price you want. Micheals usually has a coupon for like 20-40 % off framing in the paper once every few weeks.
