8 Things to Consider Before You Purchase your Glider Rocker
How to Choose the Best Glider Rocking Chair
When you are setting up a nursery, it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of it all. You want to pick out a theme, buy all your toys, accessories and of course furniture.
New parents often spend more time on the look of the bedding, the pictures on the walls, and all the new clothes and toys that will be waiting for your precious little baby. When it comes to furniture, parents take great care in choosing the right crib, mattress, changing table, dresser etc.
But when it comes to glider rocking chairs, most pay more attention to whether or not it fits the color scheme than they do to the quality and functionality of the piece.
All glider rockers are not created equal. There are many features available most people are not aware of. So when it comes time to pick out a glider rocker do not buy the first one you see. Take a closer look and make sure you purchase one that meets your needs.
- Sit in the chair and feel how the glider moves. It should feel smooth. Remember, your glider rocker will be used more often than the floor models, so if the floor model is rough, you know this is not the glider for you
- Different gliders have different glide lengths. The longer the length, the more relaxing the glide
- The glider should be silent. You would be surprised to find out how many people complain that their gliders squeak. Not only does that get on your nerves after a while, it can also disturb the baby and make it harder for him or her to fall asleep
- Look for glider rockers with multi-position locks. This enables you to lock the rocker in whatever position feels best for you. It can also be important when you are trying to stand up with your arms full. A solid surface reduces the risk of falling or having an awkward time getting up and waking the baby.
- Some glider rockers come with a reclining option. You can lock it into the position that you find the most comfortable
- Padded arm rests. A glider may feel perfectly comfortable while sitting in it for a few minutes, but keep in mind you will spend hours not minutes in it when you take your baby home. Padded arm rests help make those hours more comfortable for you.
- Removable cushions are a must. Let's face it, babies make messes. Whether the old cushions are stained, worn or you just feel like changing the decor, it is always nice to have the option.
- Glider rocker cushions come in many colors and patterns, but they also come in a variety of thickness and comfort. Do not sell yourself short. The whole idea of having a glider rocker in your nursery is so you and your baby can spend time together in a comfortable relaxing place.
The next thing we should discuss is glider ottomans. You want to look at the same basic things, such as smoothness, glide length etc. But, believe it or not ottomans have features all their own.
The most important would be the foot rest. The foot rest slides out from underneath the ottoman and locks into place. This is perfect for nursing or bottle feeding the baby. It provides a steady surface for your feet and relieves some of the strain on your back.
The last thing to consider on both your glider rocker and your glider ottoman is the type of stain or paint used on the wood itself. Be sure it says non-toxic.
