Watercolors And Other Animal Paintings
Nowadays, the prized art of many homes is actually doggie art, featuring works of the Masters or simply photo mugs of pet pooches. A pastel portrait of four dogs was commissioned by a mother daughter pair from Memphis, Tennessee, who chose a famous artist to render it. According to the daughter, they are glad for this remembrance, since two of the pooches have died. If your trail of thought ends in the conclusion that one dog looks like the next, refrain from sharing it.
Last year, their two remaining dogs, Kelly Rae, a cockapoo puppy, and Miss Manners, a Lhasa apso, had a paired shot. While Kelly is curious and friendly, Miss Manners can be standoffish. And it's all captured right there. Doggie art has even found its way into the hands of serious art collectors.
Good quality animal portraits were valued at $2,500 ten years ago, a value that has since multiplied four times, according to a Manhattan gallery owner and expert in 19th century animal art. Recently a painting of Neptune, a Newfoundland was auctioned for $577,000 a record price for a painting by the 19th century's pre eminent animalier. One animal profile painting, done by French animalier from Long Island, was bought at $250,000.
According to the gallery owner, the revival of Victorian decor caused this trend. The English cherished animal paintings, whether of pets or farm animals, for both personal and business value. Adding a painting of an animal gives a room a homey feel.
Whether high art or pet art, she does not discriminate. Pet paintings have swept the nation by storm, and she considers this serious art. Finicky owners cannot get an exact replica of their dogs unless they commission their own paintings, especially since descendant dogs no longer resemble their ancestors. Special commissions usually involve working from photos and alterations suggested by the patron. A water colorist, based in Germantown, Tennessee, shared a story about a client who made her redo a painting of his two shaggy dogs to include a sparkle in their eyes. On the other hand, with her five pose portrait of a dachshund, she completely satisfied the patron.
The past 13 years have been fruitful for another water colorist from Eads Tennessee, who does houses and pets. While most ask her to paint dogs and horses, there are instances in which she was asked to do cats, fish, and a frog. Especially when the painting is of a deceased pet, the client's reaction when he sees the painting reveals everything to her. There are owners who end up crying.

I was at the Hermitage this summer, and I saw the most amazing painting of a chained up dog. I thought it was the most beautiful painting in the world. Sadly, I do not remember the name of the artist, or the painting itself for that matter.
