Ronda or an incursion into the past
Holiday in Ronda
Ronda is a beautiful mountain destination in Spain; the trip to its hills can be a difficult one for those who don't love the adventure, but the views compensate. Ronda, besides being a wonderful destination for those who love going to the mountains, is also a perfect place for those who want to take journeys into the past, as it stands among the oldest cities of Spain. Archeological discoveries show marks of the Neolithic Age, and the paintings on the walls of the Pileta Cave demonstrate the fact that the Paleolithic Age brought inhabitants in this area. The fact that it stands on the top of a mountain made Ronda a very attractive location to build a city, as the volatile times demanded for the cities to have very good defenses. The Romans decided that it would be easier to defend than other cities, so they started to build what tourists see today: the modern Ronda. However, the Moors took control over the region from the Romans, just like they did in many other regions of Spain. They were the ones who built the beautiful arches and the gates of the city, which can still be seen today. They left many marks of their architectural skill all around the city, transforming it into a beautiful one; the Arab Baths, built around the 13th or the 14th centuries, are protected by law since 1931, so imagine their importance for the historical past of the city.
Sightseeing in Ronda
Casa Rey Moro, which in translation would be the House belonging to the Moorish King, is a very important sightseeing monument and it should be on your list. Dating back to the 18th century, the house was in ruin until its restoration was started; now, the tourism office is hosted on its first floor. The "New Bridge" is also worth your attention; here, you will have the chance to see some architectural wonders: houses are really hanging over the cliffs. The sightseeing list should also contain the oldest Bullring in Spain, inaugurated over two hundred years ago, in 1785. When you get tired of sightseeing, visit the Tajo Park. This is a lovely place where you can take a breath of fresh air; it is a great place to be with just yourself and your thoughts. Enjoy the narrow and cobbled streets, the tapas bars and the amazing history of Ronda!
