How to Take a Dog's Portraits
It's very rare that a dog does not start showing signs of human behavior. It seems its not only dog owners who believe the almost human qualities that their pets show, which include human emotions like embarassment, annoyance, and irritation. The knowledge gained from studying the moods, likes, and dislikes of dogs make animal portraits a success.
To show that he does not want to have a picture taken of him, a dog would bark at the wrong moment or not prick up his ears. The dog could decide to be obstinate and keep the portrait artist distracted. Instead of appealing to the dog's sense of smell to get it to do a noticeable pose, try to surprise it by appealing to its sense of hearing. A sniffing dog extends his neck, completely ruining the desired graceful lines and contours, but a mildly startled one pricks us his ears, and stands erect.
Taking pictures of your dog is best done early in the morning before he feeds so that he is bright and alert. The hungry dog's alertness causes him to pose more readily. It is cooler in the morning, so the dog feels cool as well and will not pant as much as when it has already played later on in the day. A fatigued dog is out of the question as a subject and, unless the dog is a German Shepherd or a Saint Bernard, so is a dog with his mouth open.
We can say that the studios of dog photographers are similar to the studios of radio broadcasting stations in one particular way. You can find any kind of sound effect there for instant use. Available sounds include mouse squeaks and duck quacks.
A breeder expects that when he looks at his dog's portrait proofs he will see a perfect shot of his dog which shows only details which make him valuable. Dog photographers know that there is a difference between the sketcher's work and the photographs of canine portraits. In drawing a picture, the artist makes an effort to show only what he can see and not what he knows is also there. For dog photographers, capturing what is not easily seen is what they must do.
When taking photos of a daschund, make sure its length is exaggerated. Most breeds should have their bodies fixed at a slight angle with their feet planted firmly on the ground. Of all the breeds, the German boxer seems to be the most sophisticated. While quite friendly to humans, this dog can turn nasty when other dogs are present.
Amateur photographers would sometimes fail to remember that dogs who are hungry are easiest to photograph. Feeding the dogs before or during the photo shoot is a mistake, because they will end up with subjects who won't be active. If the dog is alert, he can assume the stance with no problem at all.
Sometimes, photographers don't want the breeders to be there when the dog is being posed. Their reason for doing this is that dog owners can act much like nervous mothers watching over their child. A dog would be too familiar with what its master does to get his attention. This would be a different matter if various sound effects were used since this would bring out the desired reaction from the animal.
