Papaver Orientle Poppy – Anything But Common

There is a lot to love about the poppy, it is a gorgeously striking flower, which though it commands attention, it demands very little attention outside the ordinary from the gardener. The Papaver Orientle is commonly known as the Oriental poppy and is anything but common as those gardeners converted to the ease and outstanding beauty of these long blooming flowering plants will tell you.

Poppies have been cultivated for culinary and medicinal purposes from time immemorial and there are even Greco-Roman myths featuring the poppy and naturally who can forget the Wizard of Oz and its field of poppies? This beautiful flower so prized by so many is as common as a weed in Europe and grows wild in many places. In Puerto Rico the poppy flower is significant and traditional in weddings. The poppy is pervasive and yet so often ignored in gardens that could benefit from them.

The Papaver Orientle began as a brilliant orange poppy but its beauty was so outstanding that horticulturists began to breed this lovely flower for all the variations we see today such as the sumptuous red Pride of Livermore or the pristine white Royal Wedding poppy.  The flowers on the poppy are around 3 – 4 inches in size and blossom from almost leafless stems. These elegant flowers command attention even amongst a riot of competing blooms.

Though beautiful indeed, gardeners planning on growing Papaver Orientle should make some preparations as well in ordering and arranging their garden. The Papaver Orientle is a perennial which will draw every eye to it when in flower. Its foliage is luxuriant and will provide a gorgeous cover.

The Papaver Orientle Poppy is native to central Asia and its flowering cycle is adapted to survival to that climate. The foliage that surrounds the poppy during the spring is handsome and though not as eye catching as the poppy flower itself it certainly provides a beautiful backdrop and fill in for the garden.

The Papaver Orientle poppy will bloom during spring/early summer. However once summer hits its peak the foliage that so graced the garden area becomes dormant. This adaptation permitted the poppy to survive the arid summers of its native region. The gardener should be prepared though with some plants to help fill in the gaps where the once luxuriant foliage was. While the poppy blooms it simply steals the show.

Aside from this one factor poppies are very easy going plants. You plant them, let them stay where you put them (they don't like to move) provide them with well aerated soil, and don't overwater.  Be sure and give them at least full six hours day sunlight. Unlike most flowering plants they are dormant during the hottest seasons.  The Papaver Orientle Poppy can be moved after summer dormancy or early spring it is at that time that root cutting to propagate is done as well.

When ease of care, a hardy plant with a startling riot of blooms is desired, you will find poppies and if you do not, then plant some. Few gardens are complete without this colorful complement to the warming weather.

Does anyone know how much a Halls "Red Poppy" china set is worth?

I am thinking about purcasing the china set from my moher and I would like to know if anyone knows the approximate value.

I can't say what the set might be worth as I have no idea what it contains, or what condition it is in. Here is a link to a site that can tell you some recorded selling prices for individual pieces. Be aware that there are regional differences in terms of what the market will bear. This should at least give you a little help in reaching a fair price with your mother though.
