Art has long been a favourite way of investing money in something that should gain in value. For centuries art lovers have speculated on new artists, or bought works of art created by fashionable or famous artists. As with an artist who paints pictures in the oils, the unknown sculptor will command a far lower fee than someone who has a following in the artistic community. When purchasing sculpture for sale, one thing you must take notice of is the subject matter of the sculpture. As with paintings, one of the main things that can drive up the price of any work of art is the subject of the sculpture. Time honoured themes such as animals; people or even mythical creatures are popular and should give you at least your original purchase price back. There is also a large market for abstract art which means sculptures that fall into this genre should also be a safe bet. If you are buying a sculpture as an investment, avoid current trends or fashionable subject areas as these stand a far greater possibility of devaluing in the future.
Another aspect of sculpture for sale that you should consider is the material in which it is made. Some sculpture materials are more durable than others. If you purchase a sculpture in bronze and take care of it, you can expect it to remain in pristine condition. This means that even if you choose to sell it many years after you buy it, the sculpture shouldn't have lost any financial value due to wear and tear. Auguste Rodin ~ The transition between what is often termed classic and that of modern sculpture.
La Porte de l'Enfer (translated The Gates of Hell) is a monumental sculptural group work by French artist Auguste Rodin that depicts a scene from "The Inferno", the first section of The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri.
At the top sits the Thinker, copies can be found in museum grounds worldwide. All of Rodin's thought and expertise went into the Gates of Hell. In person very impressive. When I saw them, they were next to Rodin's "The Old Courtesan or The Old Woman." One complemented the other, what difference, what aesthetic style. What transition? An advanced intellectual with an understanding of classic and innovative endeavor.
