Where can I buy a cheap used square piano?
i really need a piano, im using a keyboard right now, but my songs go way up or way low and the keyboard is too small, and i cant play my songs. im not the richest girl in the world, and i know pianos are expensive. the only thing i need is a square piano, it doesnt have to be new, it can be used, as long as it works fine. any help?
The square piano is a specific kind of piano, made through the 19th century until about 1890. They are antiques, very delicate, very expensive to own and maintain, and the bane of modern piano technicians, meaning that you'd have to have a much more expensive specialist just to tune it for you. Additionally, a square piano has about as much to do with modern pianos as your electric keyboard!
What you want, I suspect, is a spinet: a squat upright piano designed as a compromise between the upright grand and the size of the 1950's living room. They can be had fairly inexpensively, but be prepared: any spinet you get cheap will probably need fairly expensive repairs: because they are small, people don't usually unload 'em unless they have significant problems. (My favorite is the Baldwin Acrosonic, which has plastic fittings for the mechanism of every key...which degrade over time from ozone in the air and UV light. The plastic turns to goo, disabling the keys and requiring every key mechanism to be serviced. Since you pay for the replacement parts and the hours of labor to remove the original, melted parts and install the new ones, it's a gold mine for the piano technician!
Here's a counter-thought for you: Instead of shooting low, shoot high. Find your local Piano Technician's Guild certified piano technicians in your area, and get in touch, through them, with their apprentices. Apprentice piano technicians often learn how to do repairs by collecting old pianos and refurbishing them. You can often pick up a completely-reworked piano in great shape, tuned, voiced and regulated as well, for the cost of the parts. See if you can't establish a relation with the person who is destined to become your tuner/technician from the start!
You'll get whatever they have that you can afford, sure. But it's likely to be a full upright grand, because they're big and ugly by today's standards, so the tech can pick them up for free. The parts to refurb such a piano should be relatively inexpensive if it has stood idle for decades in a well-cared-for home. (The technician will not bother to rebuild or refurb a piano that has had a rodent infestation, by the way, so you don't have that worry. If you buy a junker piano yourself, you might just get one with unknown horrors lurking within!) Not only will an upright grand's action be more satisfactory than a spinet (or a God-forbid-electric-keyboard!) but the strings will be closer to the length of a baby grand, so your work on tone production will be more accurate and rewarding!
