Visa and Passport Tips to Consider before Catching Flights to Thailand

A holiday to Thailand emerges as a trip of wonderland. With tourism being one of the biggest industries in the country, Thailand ranks high in the list of most popular places to visit in Asia. However, before undertaking travel to the country, it pays to be aware of different rules and regulations. Visa Regulations

• Travellers holding British passports and planning to book cheap flights to Thailand may do so without obtaining a visa in advance. In fact, they are allowed to stay in the country for 30 days without producing a visa.

• However, visitors planning to tour the country for a longer period than authorised during entry, will have to secure an extension of stay or a valid visa.

• Thai authorities take tourism pretty seriously. Travellers taking flights to Thailand ought to know that as per the authorities, anyone who overstays by over 42 days would be detained and may also be refused permission to enter Thailand again.

• Overstaying the period of one's visit is a violation of the Thai Immigration Law. One can be slapped with a daily fine of 500 baht for every overstay day except the first day. Fines can go as high as 20,000 baht.

• Besides being detained and fined, one may also be deported. The cost of deportation has to be borne by the offender and may turn out to be much more than what one pays on buying tickets for cheap flights to Thailand.

• The Thai Embassy, a Consulate, an Immigration Officer at a point of entry to Thailand, or one of the Immigration Offices around the country are the only legal channels of obtaining an entry permit, extension of stay, or new visa.

• Travellers depending upon visa shops, travel agents, and other such sources may land up with illegal visas. This can lead to criminal proceedings, a spell in prison, huge fines, and refusal of permission to visit Thailand again.

Passport Requirements

While booking flights to Thailand, travellers also need to make sure that the validity period of their passport is not less than six months. The passport should not have missing pages or be damaged. Non compliance with these regulations usually results in refusal of permission to enter the country.

Consular Assistance

One should register with the free LOCATE service of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The service takes care of British nationals in the event of unfortunate instances. British citizens planning a long holiday in Thailand should register themselves with the British Embassy in Bangkok. Most of the consular cases in Thailand occur in Koh Samui, Pattaya, and Bangkok.
