Opinions differ although it is generally thought that the woman was not pregnant,. The hand-gesture of lifting the dress can be seen in other paintings of the time (of Madonnas and Virgin Saints) including Jan van Eyck's own Dresden Triptych and a workshop of Van Eyck painting known as the Frick Madonna.
